Spirit in a Materialist World: Bergson, Laban & the immanent spiritual

Full Day event
Friday 19th January 2018

10am - 6pm, Ivy Arts Centre

Hosted by the Centre for Performance Philosophy and the Labanarium at GSA and the University of Surrey, this one-day event will explore the intersections of performance, philosophy and 'spirit' in the lives and works of three key figures: the dance theorist Rudolf Laban, the French philosopher Henri Bergson and his sister, the artist and occultist Mina Bergson.

This will include talks and workshops exploring Laban's involvement in the fringe masonic organization, Ordo Templi Orientis, and the Bergsons' relationship - both positive and negative - to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Combining talks and performance from international contributors, this event will consider the light and dark sides of these mystical thinking practices.

With contributions from John Ó Maoilearca, Juliet Chambers-Coe, Ali Curtis-Jones, Henrik Bogdan and Charlotte de Mille
