LAUNCH OF THE INSTITUTE OF PERFORMANCE
Performance in Conversation with… Prof. Jim Al-Khalili
Wednesday 14 June, 4pm - 6pm
The Institute of Performance was founded in August 2016 to support, develop and enrich cultural research at GSA and beyond through critical thinking, writing and making. The researchers of the Institute collaborate with a wide range of arts organisations, researchers from other institutions and disciplines, as well as creative practitioners to facilitate a space for discussion, creative exchange and collaboration, and as a means to positively contribute to the social, political and cultural challenges of the contemporary world.
The launch event will introduce the work of the Institute and will include an hour long interdisciplinary panel discussion led by Professor Jim Al-Khalili (http://www.surrey.ac.uk/physics/people/jim_al-khalili/) in conversation with performance scholars from the University of Surrey:
Dr Laura Cull, Reader in Theatre and Performance: http://www.surrey.ac.uk/GSA/People/laura_cull/
Dr Patrick Duggan, Director of the Institute of Performance: http://www.surrey.ac.uk/GSA/People/patrick_duggan/
Dr Rachel Hann, Deputy Associate Dean, Doctoral College: http://www.surrey.ac.uk/GSA/People/rachel_hann/
The discussion will explore how we understand ‘performance’, what research in the discipline might look like, and how cultural practice and research about it is important intellectually, socially, politically, and culturally.
The event is free to attend but booking is essential. There will be a wine reception in the Lewis Elton Gallery afterwards.
To book, please email Beth Preen on email@example.com
We look forward to seeing you there.
Afterwards, why not join us for theatre company Idiot Child’s latest performance work What is the Plane Falls Out of the Sky? – “a playful and unusual story-led piece about fear, anxiety, and the idiosyncratic and frankly absurd strategies we employ to manage our sense of impending doom”.
