Welcome to this online performance.

The tragic story of the Titanic, with its remarkable loss of life and catalogue of disastrous causes might seem like a strange choice for a musical, and in particular a strange choice to be produced during another tragic period in history. But Maury Yeston and Peter Stone’s musical is about the resilience of humanity to not only travel through challenging episodes, but to learn and adapt from them. The loss of the Titanic led to radical improvements to maritime safety, and we are living through our own period of radical advancement in virology and immunology.

This production has been produced and rehearsed under very strict Covid-safety measures; the facemask is the lifejacket of the pandemic, and it is testament to the work of the cast, creatives and technical team that these protocols have been followed onstage and offstage, but that they have managed to create a production, both unique to the present and universal. The students (on both performance and technical programmes) have had their training disrupted and modified by the pandemic, and have ‘sailed on’ with empathy, good humour and commitment. This production is a tribute to those who were lost on that night in April 1912, and in the last year.
