A Musical Adaptation of William Shakespeare's TWELFTH NIGHT
Conceived by Kwame Kwei-Armah and Shaina Taub
Music and Lyrics by Shaina Taub
The enforced closure of theatres in the last year has been a once-in-a-lifetime event. Other than a few days around the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, or the sudden death of Princess Diana (both of which occurred before most of our students were born), we were used to theatres being places where people gathered together to enjoy the unique experience of seeing live performers sing, dance, act and tell stories. When that privilege was abruptly withdrawn last year, it was a shock.
Shakespeare was no stranger to the theatres being forcibly closed, due to a series of plague outbreaks. Many times throughout his career the authorities took the decision, and between 1603 and 1613 theatres were shut for more than 60% of the time; a total of 78 months (or 6 and half years!).
For GSA, lockdown meant moving all our classes and productions online, and then a slow return to live rehearsals and then classes, with all production so far this year being streamed online – which has meant many people, all around the world have been able to see them. Now, for our first live performance in a year, there was no other choice than our national playwright, who would perfectly understand our current predicament.
Shakespeare’s comedy of gender-bending love is given a contemporary twist in Kwame Kwei-Armah and Shaina Taub’s musical adaptation, first performed in New York’s Central Park. It brings together jazz, pop and Broadway in a jovial party that reminds us how theatre triumphs through all adversities and brings communities together in an act of healing.
We are so delighted you are able to join us and we look forward to seeing you back in our indoor theatres very soon!
With best wishes
Julian Woolford, Head of Musical Theatre
