What is a relaxed performance?
A relaxed performance is a performance where adjustments are made to create a more comfortable and accessible experience for the audience. This may include changes to lighting and sound, a more relaxed approach to audience noise and movement, and the option to leave and re-enter the theatre if needed. The aim is to create an environment where audiences can enjoy the performance without feeling restricted by traditional theatre expectations.
Who are relaxed performances for?
It’s for everyone! Relaxed performances are for anyone who would feel more comfortable experiencing theatre in a less formal and more flexible environment.
They can be particularly helpful for neurodivergent audiences, including autistic people and people with ADHD, as well as people with sensory sensitivities, communication impairments, learning disabilities or other access needs.
They can also be a great choice for children and families, particularly those attending the theatre for the first time.
Why attend a relaxed performance?
- You can experience theatre on your terms:
One of the biggest benefits of a relaxed performance is the reduced pressure to conform to traditional audience expectations. You don't have to worry as much about being completely still or silent. If you need to move, make a noise, use a sensory aid or take a break, the environment is designed to accommodate this.
- It can make your first theatre visit easier:
If you or someone you're bringing has never been to the theatre before, a relaxed performance can be a great introduction. The more flexible environment can help remove some of the uncertainty around what is expected, allowing you to focus on the experience itself.
- You can bring the whole family:
Children don't always experience theatre in the way adults expect them to. They may move, talk, react loudly to what's happening on stage or need a break.
A relaxed performance provides a more accommodating environment, making it easier for families to enjoy a performance together without worrying about whether their child is behaving in the "right" way.
Is a relaxed performance different from a “normal” performance?
The production itself remains the same. The only difference is that the environment has been designed with a wider range of audiences in mind. You can still enjoy the full theatrical experience. Relaxed doesn't mean reduced.
What will a GSA relaxed performance be like?
At GSA, we are committed to making theatre as welcoming and accessible as possible. We’ve previously presented relaxed performances, including; Once Upon A Lifetime, A Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, etc and we are pleased to continue creating inclusive theatre experiences for our audiences. You can expect:
- Adjustments to sound levels, lighting, and the overall environment will create a more comfortable space for those who may feel overwhelmed in traditional theatre settings.
- Audience members are free to come and go as needed
- A quiet space available for anyone who may need a break (there will be sensory lighting, fidgets, blankets, a sofa, a screen and headphones to continue watching the performance for those who wish to do so).
- The performance will incorporate a short introduction before it begins, where cast members will introduce themselves and demonstrate relevant aspects of lighting and sound that might be featured in the performance.
