Foundation Programme in Acting

The Foundation programme in Acting aims to nurture and develop skills and techniques for those who aspire to training within either a conservatoire or higher education environment in pursuit of a career within the creative industries.

The programme is delivered over two semesters focussing upon the rudiments of the actor’s craft. Throughout each semester, the programme focuses upon the following core subject areas;

Various acting techniques and practitioners are studied, including, Stanislavski and Sanford Meisner. Students will develop approaches and techniques to acting and text analysis through the study and practice of scenes in a contemporary play, a classical text, and works related to the Naturalistic and American Realism movements. 

Guidance and preparation for the selection and delivery of contemporary and classical monologues required for auditions onto professional performance programmes. Audition technique is taught in group and one to one sessions

A range of skills based classes are delivered within the programme. These will include:

  • Improvisation
  • Movement
  • Dance
  • Voice
  • Group Singing

Students are offered support and guidance for the submission of applications to conservatoires and higher education institutions.

Workshops and masterclasses will be given by faculty from fellow conservatoires and industry professionals. 

In Semester two, the students will perform in a professionally supported Showcase of work within one of GSA’s performance venues.

In Semester two, students will undertake an Acting for Camera project, learning the basic camera techniques and skills required for further screen acting training.

2019 entry requirements

We do not require any further education qualifications and we can accept students aged 18 and over.

Please bear in mind that if you are planning to progress to drama school or university after the Foundation Course you may need to have the necessary qualifications to meet their entry requirements.

GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C or above (or equivalent)

IELTS minimum overall: 6.5

IELTS minimum by component: 6.0

The Foundation course tuition fees are £9000 for the academic year which have to be paid in 3 instalments: £3000 upon acceptance of the offer, £3000 by 1st September and £3000 by 1st January.

Please note that government loans are not available for this course.


Our auditions start in February 2019 

Acting students will be required to prepare:

Two monologues of no more than 2 to 3 minutes each. One contemporary/modern (post 1950) and one Shakespeare.

The speeches should be contrasting and in your own accent. Ideally the characters you choose should be close to your own playing age. 

Auditionees will be required to take part in both a movement and acting workshop, so please bring comfortable clothing and footwear which will enable you to move freely.

The audition process/session will last approximately 2 hours.     

Successful candidates will be notified via email.

The Foundation Acting programme is both an innovative and intensive course led and taught by GSA’s highly skilled trained tutors and industry professionals.

Graduates of the Foundation Acting programme have been awarded places at; RADA, LAMDA, GSA, East 15, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Mountview, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Arts Ed, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Birmingham School of Acting, Rose Bruford, Drama Centre, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Manchester School of Theatre.
