Preparing Students for Success: How Guildford School of Acting Builds Employability

At the Guildford School of Acting (GSA), employability is central to everything we do. As part of the University of Surrey, GSA combines rigorous conservatoire training with a strong focus on preparing students for professional careers in the creative industries. 98.9% of our students go on to employment or further study (Graduate Outcomes 2025, HESA). Here are some of the ways we achieve this:

  1. Industry Days and Professional Feedback

GSA hosts Industry Days in London, where agents, producers and casting directors are invited to watch students audition. These events provide early exposure to the profession and valuable opportunities for students to receive direct professional feedback, helping them understand industry standards and how to develop their work. 1. Public Productions and Industry Visibility

Students perform in public productions staged in GSA’s professional theatre spaces. These productions operate to professional standards, and industry agents, directors and practitioners regularly attend performances, giving students ongoing exposure to industry audiences and providing employment opportunities. Keep an eye on our performances and events page.

  1. Final-Year Showcases

In their graduation year, students take part in a professional digital showcase seen by agents, casting directors and other industry professionals. These showcases act as a key bridge between training and employment, offering students the opportunity to present their work at a pivotal moment in their development.

  1. Industry-Focused Training

Our programmes are designed in line with current industry practice. Students train in professional rehearsal and production environments, developing technical excellence alongside the discipline, adaptability and resilience required for sustained careers. Professional development is embedded into the curriculum, covering audition technique, self-promotion, career planning and transferable skills.

  1. Teaching by Industry Professionals

GSA’s teaching team is made up of experienced practitioners from within the industry, including directors, casting agents, choreographers, voice coaches, movement specialists, and technical professionals, alongside academic/research staff. This means students are not just learning techniques but are networking and engaging with people who are active in the field.

Regular masterclasses and workshops with visiting industry professionals, alumni, and other specialists give students direct insight into professional expectations and working practices. Find out more about our staff.

  1. Preparing Graduates for a Modern Industry

Training at GSA reflects the realities of today’s creative careers, including screen work, self-taping, digital skills and entrepreneurial thinking. Students are encouraged to be versatile and adaptable, equipping them for a wide range of career pathways.

  1. Support Beyond Graduation

Students also benefit from the University of Surrey’s wider award-winning careers and employability services, providing additional guidance, resources and support during and after their studies. Our graduates are entitled to career support up to three years after they complete their studies, as well as lifetime access to the Surrey Employability Hub.

Strong alumni networks further enhance employability, offering inspiration, mentorship and professional connections across theatre, film, television and the wider creative industries.
