GSA in "Dys is Me" – A Ground-breaking Short Film Exploring the Sensory World of Dyspraxia

Dys is Me aims to provide an immersive and deeply personal experience of living with dyspraxia – a little-known neurological disorder that affects coordination and movement. Led by award-winning writer-director Stacha Hicks who teaches screen acting for the MA Acting programme at GSA, the film explores the challenges faced by those with the condition through a unique, sensory-driven narrative that puts viewers directly in the shoes of a dyspraxic person.

With an exciting team of industry professionals, GSA academics and students, Dys is Me sets out to do more than simply explain dyspraxia – it seeks to feel it. The film transports audiences through surreal worlds, from the chaotic and slapstick universe of Charlie Chaplin to the high-octane energy of kung fu masters and digital motion capture environments, all while exploring the intense, often overwhelming sensory experience of navigating the world as a dyspraxic person.

Dys is Me is not a documentary – it's a journey,” said Hicks. “We’re creating a sensory experience that will challenge how people perceive the world, helping them understand what it’s like to live with this condition. We want to foster empathy, break down biases, and ultimately bring the dyspraxic community into focus.”

20 GSA students from different programmes will take part in the film as performers and will help create stylised choreographic sequences for the film. Of the two lead actors, one of them is Alexandra Thomas who has just graduated from the MA Acting programme. Watch her chat with her co-star about the film here: igg.me/at/dysisme/x#/

Filming has commenced on campus and mostly in the Ivy Arts Centre and the TV studio, working closely with the GSA technical team who have been of invaluable help, as well as staff from the TV Studio and in FADA.
